St Andrew, Hittisleigh

The parish church of St Andrew is set on a hill 650ft above sea level on the northern edge of Hittisleigh.

The church is on the route of  he Two Moors Way, and many walkers and cyclists visit the church to savour its peaceful, rural setting and to enjoy the views of Dartmoor.

The Church

The original Norman chapel was probably on the site of the present sanctuary and chancel. The walls up to cill height or higher are probably the original.

In about 1500 the north aisle and tower were added, all other windows were inserted and the whole church re-roofed. A four-arched archade divides the nave from the north aisle, which is only some three feet shorter than the nave.
