St Michael, Spreyton

St Michael’s church is set on the western edge of the village, enjoying fine views of Dartmoor from its position 735 ft above sea level. An impressive avenue of lime trees forms the main approach to the church from the lych gate.

Whether you join us in worship or visit to look around our beautiful church, you’ll find a warm welcome here, as well as the odd Archangel!

The Church

Of Norman origins, St Michael’s underwent a major rebuild in 1451 with later modifications and restorations in the 19th and early 20th century.

The chancel wagon roof includes large oak bosses, which feature the tinners’ hares, a green man and sacred monograms. It also displays a Latin inscription in gothic letters on the ribs and purlins by the first priest, Henry le Mayne, a native of Normandy, recording that the building was financed in 1451 by Robert of Rouen de Becdenne, Prior of Cowick, and Richard Talbot Esquire, Lord of Spreyton.
